Michael James, a friend from Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), interviewed me for his show, Live From the Heartland, that broadcasts out of Chicago.
We covered a lot of territory and he asked me about my memoir, Voice Lessons. I was drawn into activism by the civil rights struggle in 1963. I joined SDS, helped found Austin’s underground newspaper The Rag, and was put on disciplinary probation by the University of Texas for giving a speech against the war in Vietnam. I moved to New York City and worked with the North American Congress on Latin America and Rat newspaper. When I returned to Austin I became immersed in a vibrant women’s liberation movement. For more, read Voice Lessons. It’s my history and my tribute to lifelong activism in the cause of social justice. Happy Labor Day, y’all!
Enjoyed it, Alice. Though for some reason, while it came up on YouTube on my phone, I couldn’t find it on YouTube on my TV. I would have liked the big screen! Your book is terrific. I noticed you had a Democratic Socialists of America poster on the wall behind you. DSA is certainly a good thing for people to get involved with.
How did I miss your memoir?!? Looking forward both to the book and interview.
